The Legacy

Audemars Piguet movement finishing in the Vallée de Joux

In 1875, two young watchmakers — Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet — joined forces in the remote village of Le Brassus, deep within the Vallée de Joux. Their ambition was simple yet audacious: to create the finest complicated timepieces in the world. Nearly 150 years later, their names still grace a manufacture that has never left the ownership of the founding families.

Audemars Piguet stands as one of the “Holy Trinity” of watchmaking, alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. What sets AP apart is its fierce independence. As the oldest fine watchmaking manufacture still in the hands of its founding families, every decision — from movement architecture to the finishing of each component — is guided by the same values established in that small Joux Valley workshop.

The Vallée de Joux itself is central to AP's identity. This isolated Swiss valley, with its harsh winters and tradition of meticulous craft, has produced more fine watchmakers per capita than anywhere on earth. AP's artisans continue to hand-finish movements with techniques passed down through generations — bevelling, circular graining, and Geneva striping that can only be appreciated under a loupe.

Royal Oak

“1972. Gérald Genta. One napkin sketch. The luxury sports watch was born.”

On the eve of Baselworld 1972, Gérald Genta sketched what would become the most revolutionary watch design of the 20th century. The Royal Oak shattered every convention — a luxury sports watch in stainless steel, with an octagonal bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws, the unmistakable “tapisserie” dial, and the world's first integrated bracelet on a luxury timepiece. The 39mm “Jumbo” ref. 5402ST remains the grail for collectors worldwide.

Royal Oak Offshore

“1993. Bigger. Bolder. The Offshore was born for those who break rules.”

Conceived by Emmanuel Gueit and launched in 1993, the Royal Oak Offshore took the DNA of the original and supercharged it. Larger at 42mm, with a more pronounced bezel, oversized pushers, and distinctive crown guards, the Offshore brought haute horlogerie to the world of extreme sports. Initially controversial — dubbed “The Beast” — it went on to define an entirely new category of oversized luxury sports watches.

CODE 11.59

“2019. A new chapter. Modern complications meet contemporary design.”

Named after the foundational elements of AP's philosophy — Challenge, Own, Dare, Evolve — CODE 11.59 represents the manufacture's vision for the future. With a complex case architecture featuring both round and octagonal geometry, lacquered dials of extraordinary depth, and in-house movements including flying tourbillons and minute repeaters, it is Audemars Piguet's most ambitious collection to date.
